WINDSOR, N.S. – More than 15,000 people watched the annual Pumpkin Regatta in Windsor on Sunday.

Forty giant pumpkins were hollowed out and paddled across the Avon River. Some were manned by a doubles crew — others were paddled solo.

Some participants were apprehensive but most said they couldn’t wait for the start gun.

“Why not? I love pumpkins and I always have,” said Angela MacLeod, who came from Cape Breton. “Why wouldn’t you want to get in a giant pumpkin and go across the river?”

Singles group gold medalist Joe Seagram has paddled the race for seven years. He has won once before but said there’s no real way to train for a pumpkin regatta, because paddling a pumpkin is like nothing else.

“Imagine getting into a giant tea cup: it’s tippy and 360 degrees and it’ll spin, so if you’re paddling to the right it’ll spin to the left, paddle to the left, it’ll spin to the right,” he said.
