EDMONTON – The RCMP, members of the Edmonton Police Service, and special guests attended the unveiling of a special plaque honouring Police Service Dog Quanto Tuesday.
Quanto died on October 7, 2013. While on duty, he was stabbed during an altercation with a suspect who was trying to get away from police.
In May, he was inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame for his service and bravery.

On Tuesday, a plaque was posted at the doors of RCMP K Division.
Paul Vukmanich was sentenced to 26 months behind bars, which includes 18 months for the death of Quanto. He was also banned from owning a pet for 25 years. He pleaded guilty to six charges, including cruelty to an animal, which was – at the time – the strongest criminal charge that could be laid.
Also in May, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced “Quanto’s Law” – legislation to better protect police service animals injured or killed in the line of duty.

The goal of the law is to denounce and deter the willful harming of specially trained animals used to help law enforcement officers, persons with disabilities or the Canadian Armed Forces.
