Calgary sex offender could face more charges

A notorious Calgary sex offender, behind bars for allegedly breaching terms of his probation, could face more charges.

Eric Wanamaker is under investigation by officers from the Calgary Police Tech Crimes Unit.

He was arrested and taken into custody earlier this week on suspicion he had accessed the internet.

Staff Sergeant Brian Rayner of the Calgary Police High Risk Offender Program says, “it came to our attention he was trying to get onto the internet – for what purpose at this time we don’t know, and that’s what the investigation will hopefully show”.

Wanamaker had been on strict probation since his last release from prison.

He was under a judge’s preventing him from being around children or accessing the internet through computers, or any other means.

Wanamaker is now in remand facing 17 charges of breaching conditions of  his release.

And police are trying to determine now if those alleged breaches led to any other crimes. “Safety is paramount, and to correct his behavior to make sure he’s abiding by his conditions is first and foremost”, says Staff Sergeant Brian Rayner.

“He was arrested because of those (alleged) breaches.. (and) part of this investigation is to see if those breaches can lead to further charges”.

Investigators have seized items from Wanamaker, and will examine them to see if he was accessing child pornography – a crime he’s been convicted of several times in the past few years.

If so, police say they could be laying more charges.

Wanamaker will be back in court for a bail hearing next week.
