Officials say a lockdown was put in place at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Matsqui Institution, a medium security prison, to enable staff members to conduct a full search.

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and 316 inmates.

No visits are allowed while the prison is in lockdown.

Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.
