VANCOUVER – It has been three years since the death of Surrey teen Maple Batalia.

The 19-year-old SFU student was gunned down in a campus parking lot after a late-night study session on Sept. 28, 2011. She was studying to become a dermatologist but was also an aspiring actress and model.

Batalia’s former boyfriend Gurjinder “Gary” Dhaliwal was charged with first-degree murder.

Dhaliwal’s “associate” Gursimar Singh Bedi was charged with manslaughter and being an accessory after the fact.

While Bedi was released, Dhaliwal has been in custody since his arrest. The trial is set to get underway in summer 2015.

On Sunday night there will be a candlelight vigil in memory of Maple Batalia and other women who have lost their lives in the community, such as Julie Paskall and Serena Vermeersch.

The vigil will be held at Holland Park in Surrey, starting at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a candle.
