Two men have been arrested for selling fake gold jewellery on the street in Vancouver.

Police say the men allegedly approached victims on the street or in parking lots, telling a story about hardship and the need to buy gas and food.

The men offered to sell “gold” jewellery that they had on them at the time. The gold-coloured rings and chains were stamped with “18k” but it was fake.

Victims didn’t realize until later that the jewellery they bought from the men was worthless.

39-year-old Florin Mustata has been charged with one count of fraud under $5,000. 30-year-old Ion Mustata is facing charges of two counts of fraud under $5,000.

Both men will appear in Surrey Provincial Court on October 6.

“If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is,” says Sergeant Randy Fincham of the Vancouver Police Department.
