REGINA – A late blast of summer on the first full day of Autumn brought out an increase of golfers.
“They get to sit on the beautiful deck and have a few last beers with their buddies,” said Archie Cameron, general manager of the Royal Regina Golf Club. “It’s just good, all-around good for the economy of the golf club.”
Between 20-30 per cent more people played golf at the club this week compared to the same time last year; all 920 tee times were booked.
Traffic has also increased at Western Cycle Source for Sports.
“A couple of weeks ago when it was cold, we were sort of like, ‘Okay, this was it for the summer’. We were prepping the shop and the sales floor for the winter season,” said Bert Seidel, a general bike mechanic at the store.
Seidel said late last week, as the weather warmed up, more people started visiting the store for repairs to get back riding.
Cyclists are also trying to taking advantage of the temperatures even when the sun isn’t as cooperative.
“We’re selling a little bit more bike lights than we do over the summer. And people are looking at high-visibility clothing,” he said.
The rising mercury has created a growing nuisance around Wascana Lake.
“The challenge for us is it’s been so moist and now so sunny, that the grass is growing, the weeds are growing, and, of course, a lot of our seasonal staff have gone back to university,” said Bernadette McIntyre, CEO of Wascana Centre.
Wascana Centre is down from 130 staff members during peak season (June, July, and August) to around 70-80 now.
McIntyre said despite being a bit behind on weed-pulling, it’s worth it to bask in the sun.
“It’s glorious, and we love it and we want to keep it,” she said of the weather.
