Bus crashes after driver collapses

A bus load of Winnipeg school children escaped serious injury when their chartered bus crashed into a house. But their driver wasn’t so lucky.

A spokesperson for St. John’s Ravenscourt, a private school, says the Beaver Lines vehicle carrying kids home from school was involved in an accident after the driver collapsed. The bus wound up crashed into a house at Mathers Avenue and Waverley Street in South River Heights.

Emergency crews were seen performing CPR on the driver; there was no immediate word on his condition. It’s believed no one was in the home that the bus crashed into.

The accident happened at about 4:30 pm, and rush hour traffic in the area was tied up as police blocked off Waverley in both directions between Taylor Avenue and Grant Avenue. Police asked motorists to avoid the area.

The spokesman for St. John’s Ravenscourt said that by 5:30 pm all the students, who could have been from grades K to 12, had all been collected by their parents and taken home. The school will have counselors on hand Thursday to help children cope with the tragedy they witnessed.

SJR has about 15 Beaver Bus Lines vehicles contracted.
