Laval woman fined while rushing to save dog’s life

Watch above: A Quebec couple was issued a $258 speeding ticket over the weekend because they were rushing their dying Chihuahua to the veterinarian’s office. Tim Sargeant reports.

LAVAL — A Laval woman is heart broken and furious with the Laval Police Department after receiving a $258 ticket for doing 107 km/h in a 70 km/h zone while racing to bring her dying Chihuahua to the Laval Veterinarian Centre.

The dog was suffering head trauma after it fell from Francine Monette’s husband’s arms. The woman and her husband jumped in their car and started rushing to the hospital when a Laval police officer pulled them over.

After explaining the situation to the officer he escorted them to the hospital and then wrote the ticket.

Some dog owners at the hospital argue the officer should have issued a warning instead.

“Let’s say the officer (is an) animal lover. Let her off. This officer is not an animal lover,” one dog owner said.

Another said, “the dog was in need of critical care and I think they could have let her off with a warning.”

But Laval’s police department argues the officer was doing his job and made the right decision.

A veterinarian at the hospital doubts the speeding would have made a difference in saving the dog’s life.

“It is also unknown whether a few minutes would have made a difference in that situation,” said Dr. Vincent Gauthier.

Monette plans to contest the ticket.
