Controversial eviction policy in Kahnawake sparks debate

MONTREAL — There was a heated community meeting in Kahnawake Tuesday night over the question of mixed marriages, namely those between members of the Mohawk nation and their non-native spouses.

About 50 community members gathered to hash out the controversial eviction policy first created in 1981.

The policy bans First Nations members married to non-natives from living on the Mohawk territory.

Former Olympic athlete Waneek Horn-Miller is married to a white man and the mother of two young children is one of the residents in question currently facing eviction.
