Charges have been laid against a 51-year-old woman after a standoff in a residential Edmonton neighbourhood.

Police were called to the Blue Quill neighbourhood in south west Edmonton at approximately 1:30 on Monday afternoon after residents reported seeing a woman in the neighbourhood with a shotgun.

While officers were not able to confirm whether or not the woman did in fact have a firearm, they did not take any chances.

The bomb squad was called in, and the neighbourhood was evacuated.

The standoff continued into the evening, and the woman finally surrendered just after 1:00 am.

Investigators searched a suite in the complex and descovered a BB gun designed to look like a rifle.

One woman was taken into custody by police.
