“This continues to happen in relationships where there’s a breakdown of respect, and there are some people in a relationship exerting power and control over others,” says Elsbeth Mehrer from the YWCA.

She encourages anyone who witnesses violent incidents to contact police.

“If you are hearing something through the wall, if you’re seeing something out on the street, it is about calling the authorities, calling the police,” says Mehrer. “Because these things can escalate.”

Investigators say they are still looking for a knife that may have been used during the incident.
