MONTREAL – For the second time in 24 hours, and the third time in just over a year, a Rivière des Prairies daycare centre has been targeted by arsonists.

The business, located on Rivière des Prairies Blvd. near Maurice Duplessis Blvd., was firebombed at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night. The arsonists used a Molotov cocktail, said Montreal police Constable Anie Lemieux, which broke through the front window and started a small fire inside. The flames seem to have gone out on their own, she added.

A previous attempt to firebomb the daycare before dawn on Tuesday failed, with the flaming cocktail hitting the window and breaking the outside pane of glass, but failing to penetrate into the building. The incident was not reported until just after 6 a.m. Tuesday, when an employee at the daycare arrived and discovered the broken window.

In both incidents, no one was inside and the damage to the business was minor.

Police say the same business was firebombed on Sept. 3 of last year. The damage in that incident was more severe.

Police have no suspects, but are reviewing footage from security cameras in the area in an attempt to identify the culprits.

The motivation behind the repeated attacks remains unclear.
