TORONTO – Toronto city council is meeting for the final time this week before the Oct. 27 municipal election.

A full slate of issues have been scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

Some of the hot button topics include:

E-cigarettes:

Council will vote on a request to the province to amend the Smoke-Free Ontario Act to prohibit e-cigarettes wherever smoking is banned, ban the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes and limit e-cigarette displays in stores.

UPDATE: Council voted 36-2 in favour of banning e-cigarettes from city work spaces.

Toronto Raptor’s proposed practice facility at Exhibition Place:

Council approval sought for the long-term lease of a land at the west end of the Exhibition Place grounds to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment for the construction and operation of a 68,000 sq. ft. high-performance basketball development and training centre.

UPDATE: City council voted 38-2 in favour of building the new practice facility. Rob and Doug Ford were the only councillors to vote against the motion. 

All-door boarding on TTC streetcar routes:

A staff report requested council to look at implementing morning rush hour reserved lanes for TTC vehicles to improve service along streetcar routes and includes all-door boarding.

Fares on the Union Pearson Express:

Council will vote on a request to ask Metrolinx to set the fares for the Union Pearson Express at rates comparable to GO Transit fares. It is speculated that a one-way ticket from between Union Station and Pearson airport will cost from $20 to $30 as well as a $2 airport charge.

Cornerstone Place homeless shelter relocation:

A proposal for the relocation of the Cornerstone Place men’s homeless shelter from 833 St. Clair Avenue West to 616 Vaughan Road in the Oakwood Village area. Residents are concerned about the impact the move might have on the community.
