Some local superheroes descended from the rooftops of downtown Edmonton this morning, fighting to make a difference in the lives of Albertans with special needs.

Eighty Edmontonians raised at least $1,500 for Easter Seals Alberta for the chance to rappel down the side of the Sutton Place Hotel.

Among the participants was Diane Bergeron, who is blind but doesn’t let her disability stop her from trying a new adventure each year.

“Because I have my own disability, I like to support any kind of not-for-profit that do help people with disabilities,” Bergeron said. “And I want to raise some awareness – if a blind person can do this, anyone can do it.”

Tuesday’s event included an Edmonton first – Marty Rondeau made the 29-story descent in his wheelchair.

“I definitely wanted to pay back to Easter Seals,” Rondeau said. “They’ve helped me out so many times over the years and they help out so many other people in wheelchairs and it’s just such a good cause.”

Organizers were hopeful the ‘drop zone’ event would raise $130,000 for Easter Seals Alberta.
