CALGARY – A new school opened its doors Thursday morning in southwest Calgary.
But not all students are welcome.
The Sir James Lougheed School was expected to be shut down this year.
However, after holding open houses last winter, the Calgary Board of Education felt there was enough interest to give it a new lease on life as an all-boys school.
“Our goal would be that by next school year we have up to 200 students but we have to start with 80,” says Principal Dr. Garry Jones.

All four teachers on staff were brought on because they wanted to work with boys and the methods they use in the classroom will be a little different.
Instructions will be shorter and more precise, more technology will be involved and there will be more breaks through the day.
Wyatt Baehl de Lescure is starting grade two at the school this year. Having spent grade one in a mixed gender school, he says it will take him some time to adjust to the fact that there will be no girls around.
“The thing that sucks with no girls is that you can’t play any boys chase girls or girls chase boys like stuff!”
Wyatt’s mother Sarah says she is a little concerned about her son not having enough interaction with girls his own age but feels the pros of the program far outweigh the cons.
“I’m looking forward to my boys being more excited about learning.”
James Lougheed is the first all-boys school in Calgary.
There are several all-girls schools in the city; the public board has the Alice Jamieson Academy while the Calgary Girls School is a charter school.
