Mayoral candidate reacts to Lorrie Steeves Facebook post

Mayoral candidate Robert-Falcon Ouellette says he “feels sorry” for opponent Gord Steeves, whose wife’s 2010 comments on Facebook about “drunken native guys” have mired Steeves’ campaign in controversy, but says those in politics have an obligation to “educate those around them.”

Steeves’ wife, Lorrie, apologized Friday after a four-year-old racist rant about being harassed in the downtown was made public.

However, her husband isn’t set to respond to the issue until Tuesday.

Ouellete said Monday the comments tell others “no matter what you do, you will be judged by the colour of your skin.”

He said the next mayor needs to “lead by example.”
