Jacques Parizeau joins board of Quebec shareholder rights group MEDAC

MONTREAL – Former Quebec premier Jacques Parizeau is joining the board of directors of Quebec shareholder rights group MEDAC.

The appointment of the 81-year-old ex-Parti Quebecois leader comes on the heels of the resignation of the group’s president, Claude Beland, along with three other executives on Tuesday.

Former union leader Fernand Daoust, who is MEDAC’s vice-president, will serve as interim president until the group’s annual meeting in October.

Joining Parizeau on the board as of Oct. 4 is Andree Corriveau, founding president of the Quebec association of women in finance.

Founded in 1995, Mouvement d’education et de defense des actionnaires defends the rights of small shareholders in Quebec and in the rest of Canada.

An economist and former provincial finance minister, Parizeau left politics in 1996 following the narrow defeat of the sovereignty referendum.
