EDMONTON – An incident on a CN rail line outside the hamlet of Brûlé was blocking the only road into the community for at least six hours on Saturday.
A spokesperson for CN says at 12:42 p.m. one set of wheels on one train car came off the tracks in a loading yard. The car was empty at the time.
However, the derailed car prevented another train from continuing on, and that second train blocked the only road into Brûlé, which is located southwest of Hinton.
A resident tells Global News the community has been asking its MLA to have another road into the hamlet built, citing concerns with access in and out of the community in the case of an emergency. A petition has even been started.
On Saturday, the CN spokesperson said they didn’t know when the trains would be moved. CN was waiting for equipment to arrive to help get the car back on track.
A resident says the train blocking the road was moved around 8 or 9 p.m. on Saturday. However, a CN spokesperson said the car was put back on the tracks and the train moved around 6:30 Saturday evening.
The resident says trains have blocked the road in the past – and that it happens about every few months – but that this was the longest they’ve seen it blocked for.
Brûlé is just over 300 kilometres west of Edmonton.
