HALIFAX – Emergency management officials in Atlantic Canada are warning people to be ready for hurricane season with the expected arrival this weekend of hurricane Irene. Here are some tips on getting ready for an emergency:

Basic Emergency Kit: Emergency kits should include at least two litres of water per person, per day; canned and dried foods; wind-up or battery operated radio and flashlights; cash; first-aid kit; and medications.

Recommended Additional Items: A change of clothing and footwear for each person; blankets or sleeping bags, toiletries; and hand sanitizer.

Car Emergency Kit: Booster cables; tow chain, first-aid kit; road maps; warning lights or road flares; and emergency food pack.

Evacuation Kit: Take copies of important documents such as insurance papers, deeds, and wills with you; a seven-day supply of prescription medications and extra keys for your car and house should also be taken.

Pets: Bring pets indoors to try to keep them calm; ensure vaccinations are up-to-date and that records are handy; keep a collar with licence and identification; prepare special emergency kit that includes leash, food, water, bowls, toys and medications; and put a sign on your door that indicates how many pets live in your home if you have to leave without them.
