Volunteers to help band trees for charity

Volunteers in Regina are banding together to protect trees from cankerworms and Dutch elm disease, while also raising money for a good cause.

Adam Hicks from Rebuilding Dreams is getting volunteers together to band trees as a fundraiser for his most recent project: building a brand new wheelchair accessible home for one Regina family.

While the banding service is done free-of-charge, people are asked to consider making a donation to the Rebuilding Dreams program.

The goal is to band 4,000 trees in Regina, a number much higher than what the city can do on its own.

“We’ll try to do your whole neighbourhood as well,” Hicks said. “We’re not just doing your house; we’ll try to do the whole street as well.”

Wade Morrow, Supervisor of the City of Regina’s Pest Control Program, says banding elm, Manitoba maple and fruit trees is important to stop the spread of Dutch Elm disease.

“This is an opportunity to not only help a good cause like Rebuilding Dreams, but something we’re trying to do year after year,” Morrow explained.

So far there have been five cases of Dutch elm disease in Regina.

Banding will begin the last week in August and continue until the end of September.

Anyone interested in having their trees banded can phone the City of Regina at 777-7000.
