Canada leading after junior preliminaries at Pan-Am synchronized swimming event

MONTREAL – Canada stands first in two of the three figures standings and leads after preliminaries in the junior team event at the 2011 U.A.N.A Pan American Synchronized Swimming Championships.

In the junior team prelims, Canada totalled 82.174 points, the U.S., is second at 81.212 and Brazil third at 78.076. The Canadian team members are Claudia Holzner, Kaylene Scheil and Gabriella Brisson, all of Calgary, Laura Dee of Laval, Que., Tess Kruspe of Oakville, Ont., Samantha Nealon of Morriston, Ont., Lisa Sanders of Gormley, Ont., and Camille Remillard of La Plaine, Que.

“It was our best swim ever,” said Holzner, the Canadian team captain. “We got really charged by the crowd which gave us a lot of energy for the program. If we can improve our sharpness and improve technically in the final it should all come together.”

In the junior figures, Canadians grabbed positions one to six. Brisson is first at 75.956, Holzner second at 75.519 and Remillard third at 72.956.

“I always like to start the competition with the figures event,” Brisson said. “When it goes well you can use it as momentum for the rest of the competition. The biggest challenge is staying focused for a long period of time and trying to replicate what you did in training.”

In the 12 and under figures, Nicole Dzurko of the U.S., is first at 63.800 while Sabrina Barnes and Krystina Ryssina, both of Synchro Ontario, are second and third respectively at 63.756 and 63.423.

In the 13-15 figures, Anne-Marie Chouinard and Jacqueline Simoneau, both of Montreal, are 1-2 at 73.365 and 71.857.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
