Syfy series ‘The Expanse’ to be shot in Toronto

'The Expanse' is based on a series of books that include 'Leviathan Wakes' and 'Abaddon Gate'.

TORONTO — The Expanse, a “space opera” based on the bestselling series of books that includes Leviathan Wakes, will be filmed in Toronto later this year.

Cameras are scheduled to roll on the 10-episode series for U.S. cable channel Syfy in October.

According to Syfy, The Expanse is set 200 years in the future and follows “a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain” as they race across the solar system to expose “the greatest conspiracy in human history.”

The show is being produced by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who wrote the book series under the pen name James S.A. Corey.

Casting details have not been announced.

Syfy begins production early next month in Toronto on 12 Monkeys, a series based on the 1995 Brad Pitt movie. It stars Kirk Acevedo (Fringe), Aaron Stanford (Nikita) and Amanda Schull (Suits).

The network also recently shot mini-series Ascension in Montreal and airs made-in-Canada shows Defiance, Continuum, Helix and Lost Girl.
