Swiss stock market index SMI opens 1 per cent lower after US downgrade

GENEVA – The main stock market indicator on the Zurich exchange has opened 1 per cent lower.

The Swiss Market Index, or SMI, dipped in line with other global indices Monday on the first day of trading after the U.S. debt downgrade.

The 20-strong SMI includes major European companies including staffing company Adecco SA, engineering giant ABB Ltd. and watchmaker Swatch Group.
