WATCH: 4×4’s ripping up West Kelowna Telemark trails

The trails are made and maintained for telemark skiing, but in the summer, some big wheels are replacing the skis.

Four-by-four pickups are being blamed for tearing up some cross country trails near Crystal Mountain in West Kelowna.

The deep and growing ruts have the president of the Telemark Nordic Club calling on drivers to think twice before spinning their wheels.

“This is the worst I’ve ever seen it here,” says president, Bob Rogers, as he surveys the damage.

The sign to the entrance of the trails clearly says ‘authorized vehicles only’ but that doesn’t seem to be registering.

“Some of the ruts are three feet wide and two feet deep,” says Rogers.

Rogers is putting out a public appeal to the 4 x 4 off-roaders — stay out of the mud or at least wait until it dries up. Or better yet, don’t come at all.

“I would rather you walk or rode you horse than rode your 400 horsepower pick up truck through it.”
