A group of local fundraisers is now just days away from an attempt to scale one of the world’s hightest peaks, Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro.
Cpl. Mark Fuchko is among a group of soldiers, doctors, and business leaders who are set to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro beginning August 9.
Each climber is raising money for new surgical equipment for the Orthopedic Surgery Centre at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The hospital is the only one in Canada built specifically for knee and hip replacements.
“The surgical suite that they’re getting allows the surgeon to perform with more precision and do less invasive procedures when they’re operating on knees and hips,” Fuchko said. “I’m going to need both of those in the very near future here, so anything that’s less intrusive, I’m all for.”
Fuchko lost both of his legs in a blast while serving in Afghanistan in 2008.
The climbers hope to raise $575,000, to cover the cost of the new equipment and contribute to training and education at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre.
As the exclusive media sponsor for the group’s climb, Global Edmonton will be there every step of the way. Watch for video reports from Mount Kilimanjaro beginning August 9.
