NDP candidate and longtime MPP Rosario Marchese has lost the Toronto riding of Trinity-Spadina.
Liberal candidate Han Dong won with 46.1 per cent of the vote with 132 of 329 polls reporting at 10:24 p.m. election night. Marchese has 29.1 per cent.
This would be a huge upset for Marchese, who’s represented this riding for the NDP for almost a quarter-century. Still, this riding was closely watched after Marchese nearly lost his seat in 2011 to prominent local Liberal candidate Sarah Thomson. Marchese won by just over 1,000 votes.
Early in his career at Queen’s Park, he served as minister of Culture and Communications and as parliamentary assistant to the premier. In opposition since 1995, he has been a critic on a number of files.
Before taking provincial office he was a teacher and, later, a school trustee.
Dong has worked as a marketing director for Chianti Foods, and served in various community organizations such as the Canada Shanghai Business Association and the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race. He recently advised Ontario’s immigration minister.
