Campus Crusade for Christ becomes just ‘Cru’ in name change that aims to boost outreach

ORLANDO, Fla. – The evangelical mega-ministry Campus Crusade for Christ is getting a new name, partly out of concern for overseas sensitivities.

The organization will be known just as “Cru” starting next year. “Cru” is already a nickname for the group on college campuses.

The Orlando-based ministry was founded in 1951 by the late Bill Bright and his wife Vonette and grew to become one of the largest Christian organizations in the world. The group is best known for producing the “JESUS” film, which has been translated into more than 1,000 languages.

Vonette Bright said Campus Crusade wants to remove any obstacle to anyone hearing about Jesus. In the last couple of decades, several evangelical ministries have stopped using the word crusade because they say it alienates people they try to reach.
