Tsui leads Royale Cup Canadian women’s amateur golf championship by two strokes

DUNCAN, B.C. – Vivian Tsui shot an opening round of 1-under 71 Tuesday to take the early lead at the Royale Cup Canadian women’s amateur golf championship.

Tsui, from Markham, Ont., shot three birdies at Duncan Meadows Golf Course and took a two-stroke lead over a group of three players at 1 over.

The 17 year old finished fifth at the Ontario junior girls championship last week.

Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C., Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., and American Alexandra Stewart were tied for second at 1-over 72.

Kirby bogeyed her final hole of the day to drop two off the pace.

Proteau, who won her third B.C. women’s amateur title this year, leads the mid-amateur division for golfers over 25 years of age. The 28-year-old, who recently competed in the 2011 U.S. Open where she narrowly missed the cut, holds a two stroke lead over Kim Evans of Lantzville, B.C.

Evans leads the mid-master division for golfers 40 and over by three strokes after carding an opening-round 3-over par (75).

In inter-provincial competition Proteau, Amanda Baker, and SooBin Kim, carded a combined 5-over par to give B.C. a five-shot over Ontario.
