OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has named Quebec Court of Appeal judge Clement Gascon as his nominee to fill the seat on the Supreme Court of Canada previously held by Justice Morris Fish.

It’s Harper’s second attempt to fill the seat; the high court ruled in March that his original nominee, semi-retired Federal Court of Appeal judge Marc Nadon, was ineligible to sit as a Quebec justice.

Gascon spent 10 years as a member of the Quebec Superior Court before joining the Quebec Court of Appeal in 2012.

He is a specialist in civil and commercial litigation and has also lectured extensively in business and labour law in Quebec.

Harper disclosed the appointment today while on board a flight to Europe.

He says the appointment was the result of broad consultations with the legal community, and that Gascon’s wealth of legal knowledge and experience will be a significant benefit to the high court.
