Mosquitoes are picky about who they bite: expert

WINNIPEG – Mosquitoes and Winnipeg are synonymous, so it’s no surprise the bloodsuckers are out and feasting.

“They are crazy right now,” said Sean Mazur, who works outside cutting grass.

Mazur relies on bug spray to keep mosquitoes away but he still gets bitten.

Taz Stuart, an entomologist and director of technical operations at Poulin’s Pest Control, said mosquitoes do have a preference when it comes to who they bite.

People who have recently worked out are bigger targets because the bugs like lactic acid, he said.

Mosquitoes also prefer carbon dioxide, so how a person breathes is also a factor, as well as how a person smells, he said.

People who put on cologne or perfume are more attractive, as are those wearing darker clothes.

A quick search online reveals tips for avoiding mosquitoes, including using dryer sheets as well as eating bananas or garlic.

“Those are wives tales,” said Stuart, who added a person’s blood type is not a factor either.
