WINNIPEG – Coun. Thomas Steen, a former NHL hockey player with the Winnipeg Jets, was charged Thursday with two counts of assault and uttering threats against a woman on May 1.

Winnipeg police arrested Steen, 53, in early May and released him on a promise that he’d appear in court on June 23, that he’d stay away from the woman he’s accused of assaulting and that he wouldn’t drink alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

Court documents identify the alleged incident as domestic violence.

Court documents show Steen was formally charged Thursday and his next court appearance is scheduled for June 23.

Steen was elected councillor in Elmwood-East Kildonan in the 2010 municipal election.

He has remained on the job following his arrest but no longer attends Winnipeg Police Board meetings, one of his former duties as councillor.
