Inquest: Segway boss who died in scooter river plunge was probably trying to avoid dog

LONDON – An inquest has ruled that the British owner of the Segway business died accidentally when his electronic scooter plunged into a river as he made way for a man walking his dog.

Jimi Heselden died on Sept. 26, 2010 when his Segway fell 42 feet (13 metres) from a footpath into the River Wharfe in northern England.

Dog walker Sean Christie said he spotted 62-year-old Heselden on his scooter at the top of a hill, and saw him back up, presumably to make room for Christie to pass. He said Heselden appeared to wobble and then disappeared from view.

Christie found Heselden’s body face down in the river.

Coroner David Hinchcliff recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Heselden, owner of blast-wall manufacturer Hesco Bastion, bought New Hampshire-based Segway Inc. in 2009.
