TORONTO — Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik of UK boy band One Direction have sparked debate among their fans after Malik was recorded allegedly smoking pot.
In the five-minute video, obtained by the Daily Mail, Malik is seen smoking what appears to be a joint in the back of a car in Peru.
Tomlinson, who seems to be recording the video, is heard saying: “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!”
The singer aims the camera at a police officer on a motorcycle outside the car window and says: “He’s having a look. He’s thinking, ‘I’m sure I can smell an illegal substance in there.’ And he’s hit the nail on the head.'”
Possession of less than eight grams of marijuana for personal use is legal in Peru.
Tomlinson is 22 and Malik is 21.
It is not known how the video, which was reportedly shot at the end of April, ended up with the Daily Mail.
A rep for One Direction declined to comment on the video but said the group’s legal team is investigating the leak.
