Webber, who won the Silverstone race last season, posted a quickest lap of one minute 32.670 seconds, which was around one-third of a second faster than Vettel.

Vettel has a 77-point lead over McLaren’s Jenson Button, who qualified in fifth, and Webber.

The Red Bulls will start on the front row on Sunday despite team bosses complaining about rule changes on Saturday morning.
