The attack happened while Devi was visiting the basement suite she once shared with her now-estranged husband to collect some belongings. She had brought along her young daughter and friend Velji-Visram to help.

52-year-old Hari Pal, Devi’s ex-husband, has since been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, and one count of aggravated assault. He is currently in hospital being treated for self-inflicted injuries.
