“I’ve seen a lot of stuff, but never something like this,” said Lt. Jason Bell of the Ottumwa police department in an interview with KCCI News. “I really haven’t had a lot of investigations where I’ve focused so much on cheeseburgers.”
According to a police report, the couple purchased the patties in a drive-thru in late April and, after taking a bite into the sandwich, they reportedly “noticed a strong smell and observed pieces of what appeared to be marijuana on their cheeseburger.”
Police said the call they received came from a man who said the burger he bought for his pregnant fiancée had some suspected marijuana on the burger.
“We are exploring all possibilities at this point, and that factor is one thing we’re considering with the investigation,” said Bell. “It’s more of a serious allegation against a business in the community. In any business, we want to make sure we come to the best possible conclusion on where it originated from.”
Officials said they are trying to determine how the suspicious substance got into the burger and are “looking at everyone from the employees at the restaurant to the couple who reported the problem.”
Results of the substance found on the burger will not be available for weeks. No charges have been laid so far in this case.
