Geography

Spanning the eastern half of Lake Superior, Algoma-Manitoulin broadly comprises the southern area of Ontario between Thunder Bay and Sudbury, excluding Sault Ste. Marie. It encompasses a number of small towns and hamlets, with Elliot Lake being the largest.

The NDP’s Michael Mantha took this riding from Liberal MPP Michael Brown by over 4,000 votes last election, ending Brown’s 24-year career. The PCs have finished third here the last four elections, but held the seat throughout Bill Davis’ premiership.

By the numbers

Algoma – Manitoulin – Kapuskasing, the federal riding that comprises most of this district, had a 2011 population of 74,828, the second-lowest in the province. It also had a median age of 45.2, among the highest in Ontario, and a significant French-speaking population – 30.5% listed it as their mother tongue.
