Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway is on track for a multi-million dollar expansion, a move that is expected to attract more racing fans to central Alberta.
"We can draw people, and cars, from all over western Canada, and it’ll be a state-of-the-art facility," said Rob Reeves of Castrol Raceway.
Over the next two years a new 2.7 kilometre road course will be built at the existing facility south of Edmonton. A similar course in Calgary is scheduled for closure, which would leave Castrol’s track as only one of two in western Canada.
The course is designed to handle a variety of racing series, though the goal is not to take anything away from the Edmonton Indy.
"We don’t want to compete with Indy for the next three years," Reeves said. "Our intention is to get road course racing year round here in Edmonton with all the different classes."
Reeves admits that with further investment, the new track could be brought up to Indy standards. The $3 million course is expected to be built in stages over the next two years.
