DARLINGS ISLAND, NB – Flooding continues to cause inconveniences for people living along rivers in the province. The only road leading to Darlings Island near Saint John was closed Tuesday because of flood waters.
The New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources spent the day transporting dozens of residents by boat to and from the island, including about 30 students forced to catch a bus parked on the opposite side.

Darlings Island resident Don Bishop was thankful for the help.
“I could walk but I’ll be damned at 76 years old if I am going to walk when I can take a boat,” he said. “The houses are having no problem it’s just the road.”
Travis MacFarlane, with the department, says the road was closed for safety reasons.

“There’s water on the road right now and there is some pothole issues with the road surface being done. So the possibility is there that anything could happen.”
MacFarlane says the road will remained closed until water levels drop and the pavement is fixed. Some residents are parking their cars and walking to the island.
The Department says it will continue transporting residents by boat until the road is fully repaired.
