Canadians Ramin Karimloo, Nick Cordero score Tony nominations

WATCH: Nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical announced

TORONTO — Canadian actors Ramin Karimloo and Nick Cordero earned Tony Award nominations on Tuesday.

Karimloo is nominated as Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his portrayal of protagonist Jean Valjean in Les Misérables and Cordero is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in Bullets Over Broadway.

The Tony Awards honours the best in live theatre in New York City.

Karimloo, 35, portrayed Jean Valjean in last year’s revival of Les Misérables in Toronto before moving with the show to Broadway in March.

The Iranian-born, Ontario-raised Karimloo is up against Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Andy Karl (Rocky), Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), and Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder).

Karimloo’s nomination is one of only three for Les Misérables.

Cordero, from Hamilton, Ont., plays Cheech in Bullets Over Broadway. His credits include Canadian runs of Evita and Tony & Tina’s Wedding.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder leads nominations with 10, followed by the revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch with eight. After Midnight, Beautiful, The Glass Menagerie and Twelfth Night each earned seven nods.

Best Musical nominees are A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, After Midnight, Aladdin and Beautiful while Best Play contenders are Act One, All The Way, Casa Valentina, Mothers and Sons and Outside Mullingar.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Les Misérables and Violet received nods for Best Revival of a Musical. A Raisin in the Sun, Twelfth Night, The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Glass Menagerie are up for Best Revival of a Play.

Best Leading Actress in a Musical nominees are Mary Bridget Davies (A Night With Janis Joplin), Sutton Foster (Violet), Idina Menzel (If/Then), Jessie Mueller (Beautiful) and Kelli O’Hara (The Bridges of Madison County).

Among the Best Actor and Actress in a Play nominees are Bryan Cranston (All The Way), Tony Shaloub (Act One), Tyne Daly (Mothers and Sons) and Estelle Parsons (The Velocity of Autumn).

The 68th Tony Awards will be handed out June 8 during a broadcast hosted by Hugh Jackman.
