Surge of water expected along Birdtail Creek

An embankment holding back water on a tributary of Birdtail Creek has started to fail and a large surge of water is expected to flow quickly down the creek, affecting nearby communities.

The water is expected to hit Waywayseecappo First Nation between one and four hours after the release. The water will continue and is expected to impact Birtle and Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

Twelve homes in Birtle have been evacuated. Twenty people in Waywayseecappo have also been forced from their homes.

The province said in a news release that water may cover some roads and could damage bridges in Birtle.
