TORONTO – Former Olympic curling champion Kevin Martin is calling it a career.

The Edmonton skip announced on Friday that he will retire from the sport following the season-ending Players’ Championship.

“It has been an amazing run,” Martin said in a statement.

A four-time Brier champion, the 47-year-old has represented Canada twice at the Olympics, winning gold four years ago in Vancouver and silver at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. He also holds the record with 17 Grand Slam titles, including seven Players’ Championships.

Once the rocks are put away for good, Martin plans to become a broadcast analyst for Sportsnet and spokesperson for the Grand Slam of Curling.

“I am closing the chapter on my playing career in the sport of curling that has been so good to me,” said Martin. “I can’t wait for what lies ahead in my new role with Sportsnet as we work together to elevate the sport to new heights, inspiring our curling youth.”
