KELOWNA – The Kelowna Rockets are making their first Western Conference final appearance since 2009, taking on reigning WHL champions on the Portland Winterhawks.

The Rockets beat out the Tri-City Americans in round one in five games and swept the Seattle Thunderbirds in round two to earn their berth in the western finals.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The Winterhawks swept the Vancouver Giants in the first round and beat the Victoria Royals in five games to advance to the western finals for the fourth consecutive year.

Kelowna beat Portland in all four meetings over the regular season, but the Winterhawks didn’t dress their full line-up in any of those games. Many of their star players were at the world junior championship during the final double header against Kelowna, which hit the ice Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

It will no doubt be a thrilling series against the best two teams in the west, arguably the best two teams in the league.
