UPDATE: Numerous crashes on northern Alberta highway

EDMONTON – Dangerous driving conditions have caused at least 10 collisions on a 30-kilometre stretch of Highway 881 northeast of Edmonton.

Lac La Biche RCMP say the 10 crashes include five jackknifed semi trucks.

Officers closed the highway at Heart Lake earlier Wednesday, but said it was reopened around 2:55 p.m. but that there were still stretches partially covered in snow and ice.

RCMP previously closed Highway 36 at Highway 55 East following a fatal collision Wednesday morning. That stretch of road was reopened at 2:30 p.m.

Around 7:40 a.m., RCMP and emergency crews were called to Highway 36 approximately 20 kilometers south of Lac La Biche.

Three vehicles were involved in the collision.

A 50-year-old man who was driving one vehicle died from his injuries on scene.

Two passengers of another vehicle – two men who are 28 and 25 years old – were taken to hospital by ambulance where they are being treated.

Two other men in the third vehicle – aged 34 and 28 – suffered minor injuries and were treated and released by paramedics on scene.

Officers also say Highways 881, 55, 663 and 858 are all in fair condition and motorists must drive to the conditions.

Lac La Biche is about 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton.
