Derek Boogaard’s brother arrested in connection with his death

MINNEAPOLIS – The top prosecutor in the case says the brother of the late Derek Boogaard should have known better than to give his brother a narcotic pain pill the day after the former NHL enforcer left a drug treatment facility.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman tells reporters Derek Boogaard had gotten out of a drug rehabilitation centre in New York the day before his brother gave him the pill that contributed to his death.

Twenty-four-year-old Aaron Boogaard was charged Friday with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. Freeman says Aaron Boogaard won’t face more serious charges because prosecutors can’t prove the pill directly caused Derek Boogaard’s death.

Freeman says Derek Boogaard had a lot more Oxycontin than one pill, and a lot of alcohol, in his system when he was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment May 13.
