Speed bumps, traffic circles installed in N.W. Calgary communities

CALGARY – Over 40 new speed bumps, curb extensions and traffic circles have been installed in three northwest communities in an effort to get drivers to slow down.

The traffic calming measures were in response to complaints of speeding and short cutting in the neighbourhoods of Capitol Hill, Mount Pleasant and Tuxedo Park.

“Speeding is manifested by motorists who are trying to get from point A to point B very quickly and are showing some aggressiveness on the street and trying to make up for time that they hadn’t otherwise planned for,” says Rick Morris, City of Calgary transportation planner.

Most are pleased with the new installations – however, others say some drivers are simply slowing down for the bump then speeding up again until the next one – or in some cases, going right around them.

“They’ll slow down to get over the hump some of them and speed up in the middle then go over again, slow down on the other end,” says Rient Khoo, a Mount Pleasant resident.

“It’s so far in between the speed bumps so it hasn’t made much difference from that perspective.”

The city says the best way to get traffic calming measure in your neighbourhood is to contact your community association to bring the request to the city.
