If sharks make you hesitant go in the water now, imagine how you would have felt taking a dip in the ocean 80 million years ago.

Paleontologists working in southwestern Manitoba have discovered fossils of fearsome sea creatures thought to date back to that time.

Scientists from the Canadian Fossil museum say they have discovered fossils of two huge reptiles called Mosasaurs. These aquatic carnivores were about 15 metres long and have been described as “T-Rexes of the sea.”

Also in the dig site, scientists unearthed fossils of a giant, prehistoric squid as well as bird fossils.

Museum officials say the discovery of the shore bird fossils casts doubt on the accepted theory that the Canadian Prairies were underwater in prehistoric times.

The scientists plan to continue their work at the dig site for the next few years
