REGINA – The president of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Firefighters Association says some small communities are really struggling to recruit firefighters.

Doug Lapchuck says the situation is excellent in some places but in others it’s really bad.

Lapchuck says fire departments in very small communities are struggling as more young people move away.

Lapchuck’s home department of Balgonie has an active recruitment program to get teenagers interested in volunteering, and he says that seems to be working in their favour.

But he knows that it’s not an easy job to recruit anyone for this type of job because people are very busy and the time commitment to volunteer as a firefighter is not easy.
