RCMP have issued a warning of a new computer scam in the province targeting Saskatchewan residents.

According to officials, the scam involves the victim receiving an unsolicited phone call from a person claiming to be from a computer company. The suspect then tells the victim their computer is infected with viruses or has error codes. The suspect then offers to fix the problem over the internet.

Instead, a program or virus is installed that gives the suspect remote access to the victim’s computer, allowing the suspect access to all contents on the computer, including personal details and banking information.

The suspect also obtains the victim’s credit card information to pay for the service.

So far, a number of people have been scammed for over $1,500, with each victim losing between $60 and $349. There is also the risk of identity theft and the financial loss could be higher.

RCMP say indicators the call might be this scam include an an unsolicited call from a computer repair company, the caller says there is an "urgent" need to repair the computer or it is at risk or the caller requests the computer be turned on and walks the victim through installation of programs or remote access.

Police say anyone who has suffered a financial loss as a result of this type of scam should report the incident to the local RCMP detachment or municipal police force.
